SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 6 (Our California Times) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump on Monday of directing the Justice Department to investigate him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, calling the effort a “fishing expedition” and saying he had been placed on a “hit list.”

Sources familiar with the investigations said at least one California-based inquiry tied to Newsom began under the Biden administration, before Trump returned to office.

A Justice Department source said there have been at least two criminal investigations in the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of California for about a year. The source said the matters grew out of whistleblower complaints and local complaints in Sacramento, not from DOJ leadership in Washington.

The same reporting said one inquiry involved former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson, who pleaded guilty in May in a separate corruption case that did not implicate the governor.

The reports do not identify public charging documents or say whether Newsom himself is a formal target of a criminal case.
